ANIMAL MEDICAL CENTER OF LEHIGH ACRES: RATTLESNAKE BITES DOGS

Photo: AMCLA
Recently we had two small dogs, Pepper, a 7 year old Dachshund and Trixie, a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier, rushed to us after their owner discovered them in their backyard with blood, vomit, and loose stool.

Based on their physical examinations, we determined that a rattlesnake had bitten both dogs. Their owner, who found parts of a Diamondback Rattlesnake upon arriving home, confirmed this.

Pepper and Trixie were admitted to Animal Medical Center and treated by Dr. Whitney, our certified technician Marie, and assistant Sue.

After a full day of hospitalization, Antivenin and medications, they were transferred after hours to the Emergency Veterinary Center where their supportive care was continued overnight.

The following day, Pepper and Trixie were transferred to the Florida Veterinary Referral Center for more care. Forty-eight hours after initial presentation, Pepper and Trixie were allowed to go home. Five days later, they returned to AMC for a very happy follow up visit with Dr. Whitney. Congratulations on a speedy recovery, Pepper and Trixie!
